Elderly Woman Gives Thanks to Man Who Rescued Her from Fire

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - The elderly woman who was rescued from a house fire on Lamar Monday remains in the hospital, but she is reaching out to the man who rushed into her burning home to save her.

The fire broke out at the home on Lamar near Baldwin Monday morning. Belinda Wilmont said her 78-year old mother, Ramona Morales, was trapped inside the home when the flames began to spread. At the time, she was sound asleep and never knew her home was on fire.

Morales continues to recover after breathing in too much smoke from the fire, but thanks to the brave actions of a young man, Morales is alive. On Tuesday, she got the chance to say thank you.

Neighbors and a nearby masonry crew busted out windows and tried to locate the woman. It was a member of that crew who rushed inside the home and was able to pull Morales to safety.

3News spoke with Morales by phone from the Motel 6 on Lantana, where her family is staying. Five family members were living in the home and lost everything in the fire. The American Red Cross has given them a place to stay for two nights, but after that, they are not sure where they will go next.

Friends of the family will be holding a $6 hamburger benefit for the family from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. It will be held at the Briones Metal Company at 4618 Kostoryz, which is between Gollihar and McArdle.

If you would like to help the family with a few more nights at the hotel while they try to get back on their feet, there is also an account set up at Kleberg Bank to benefit the Morales family under Belinda Wilmont's name.

Morales is expected to remain in the hospital for at least another day.
