Cement Truck Crashes Through SPID Barriers, Collides with Oncoming Traffic

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Five people were hospitalized following a major accident involving a cement truck just after 11 a.m. Tuesday on SPID at Everhart. A witness at the scene called it "nothing short of horrific."

According to police, the cement truck was traveling eastbound on SPID when it had a blowout, causing the truck to crash through two concrete barriers and into oncoming traffic in the westbound lanes of the freeway. The rolling cement truck collided with at least three vehicles.

First responders dispatched the Jaws of Life to rescue two people from separate vehicles. In all, five were transported to the hospital by ambulance, with two in critical condition, according to police. Two others were treated at the scene.

A number of people, including three members of the U.S. Coast Guard who were heading toward Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi, stopped on the freeway to render aid. Witnesses said it sounded like a massive explosion. One Vietnam veteran who was at the scene said it reminded him of the war.

Police said the freeway was covered in concrete and warned drivers to expect delays. Texas Department of Transportation crews worked until around 3:30 p.m. to clean up the scene and repair the broken median in order to reopen the freeway to traffic.
