State Conference on Campus Security Being Held in Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - The first day of the next school year is still quite some time away, but safety on school campuses is the focus of a state conference being held in Corpus Christi.

More than 600 law enforcement officers and school administrators from all across Texas have been exchanging ideas. The Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University puts on the annual conference, and one of the leaders at this year's even is the superintendent of the Brownsville Independent School District, Dr. Carl Montoya.

Montoya's experience goes beyond being an administrator -- he is also a certified law enforcement officer. He said that, while school safety has improved over the years, more is still needed.

"We are becoming more aware throughout the state, through law enforcement and through school administration, that these types of things need to be looked at with emergency plans, with drills, with various activities to enhance safety and security for our students. So it's getting better," Montoya said.

Montoya said that is why these conferences are important for campus law enforcement officers and administrators. It allows for networking and the exchange of ideas. They conferences are held during the summer months so that officers don't have to take time off during the school year.
