Hooks Take Two in a Row From Cardinals

Posted: Updated:
Jonathan Meyer drove in two runs and Jordan Jankowski won for the first time since June 6 as Corpus Christi dropped Springfield 4-2 Thursday at Whataburger Field before 6,735.

The Hooks look to sweep the three-game series on Independence Day in Springfield's final Sparkling City appearance of 2014. Corpus Christi is 6-8 in Texas League second-half action, 40-44 overall. The Cardinals are 5-9 and 39-45.

Travis Ballew worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Michael Hauschild authored a three-inning scoreless hold, despite three seventh-inning walks.

Starlin Rodriguez dumped a lead-off hustling double inside the right-field line to start the Springfield third. He stalled at third, however, as Jankowski (2-3) retired the next three men.

Cardinals starter Jonathan Cornelius (7-6) set down nine of the first 10 Hooks before running into fourth-inning difficulty. Cornelius plunked Delino DeShields, Jr., who scored from second on Meyer's one-out single through the right side.

Rodriguez's first Texas League home run - a towering shot into the Goodwill Zone - provided the Cards with a 2-1 fifth-inning advantage. He left the yard following Matt Williams' lead-off walk.

Corpus Christi immediately answered, sending eight to the plate while retaking the lead at 4-2. Jio Mier set the tone with an opening double and Telvin Nash picked up the Hooks' shortstop by singling to left. Andrew Aplin produced a run-scoring single and Meyer's bounce out tallied Nash. Cornelius, who finished the fifth before exiting, permitted four hits, three walks and fanned three. Only 48 of his 84 pitches found the strike zone and he struck two batters.

Jankowski left in line for the win after five innings, four hits, a walk and two strikeouts. He threw 74 pitches (53).

Meyer has hit safely in seven straight.

July 4 brings a special 6:30 Friday start time; Whataburger Field gates open at 5 o'clock. Bud Light Friday Fireworks and the city's fireworks display off the USS Lexington entertain fans.

Kyle Smith (2-2) draws the pitching assignment for Corpus Christi. Springfield counters with Kurt Heyer (3-5).
