City Could Announce Stage 2 Water Restrictions as Early as Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - City officials said they could announce Stage 2 water restrictions anytime after combined lake levels dip below 40-percent.

The City may declare Stage 2 restrictions as soon as Tuesday. Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon's combined levels dropped over the weekend.

As of Monday, the combined level of Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon are at 40-percent, and City staff say those levels are expected to drop in the next day or so. That's when the City will decide when to impose Stage 2 water restrictions.

Those restrictions mean you can only use sprinkler irrigation for landscaping once a week on the day that your trash is picked up.

Lake Texana was added to the City's water system in the 50s, but is not included in combined lake levels.

Other things to consider when Stage 2 restrictions are declared are that you can only wash your car on the day that you are allowed to use your sprinklers. Fines can range up to $500 for not following the restrictions.

When it comes to Stage 2 water restrictions, a couple of things that you cannot use are hose in sprinklers and irrigation systems. So how can you keep your lawn hydrated? There's actually a new device you can use.

"We have a real nifty tool here at the nursery. It's called the Hover Sprinkler. It's a real good way to hand water," said Trent Hoffman, owner of Bay Area Landscape Nursery. "It waters directly into the ground without a lot of waste. Real lightweight. Real easy to use. So we really recommend that, as far as the hand watering, because it will get enough water into the ground, deep into the roots."

The Hover Sprinkler is actually available at many area nurseries and online.
