Robstown Pool Reopened Just Over a Week After Tragic Drowning

Posted: Updated:
ROBSTOWN (Kiii News) - The Diaz Park Public Pool in Robstown had been closed since the tragic drowning of seven-year old Allison Campos on Sunday, June 29. However, the pool reopened Tuesday.

Among those who showed up for the pool's reopening were Campos' relatives.

Police ruled Campos' drowning an accident, but in order for the pool to reopen, City officials and lifeguards had to go through several meetings throughout the week. One of those meetings was to help the lifeguards cope with the grief that many of them were dealing with.

"Obviously we train them and prepare them for a situation that never happens. When it does, all you can do is step up and do what you need to do, and that's exactly what they did," Robstown Pool Manager David Flores said. "They're pretty scared with it. They didn't do anything wrong. They did everything they were trained to do, but to actually witness that happening, that is hard to take. Emotions are running high still, to this day, with my staff."

Pool officials would like to remind everyone that they need to keep an eye on their kids at all times, because tragedies can happen in the blink of an eye.

As for the family members of Allison Campos, 3News asked what brought them back to the pool just over a week after the tragedy.

"I felt like I needed closure," Ruth Campos said. "I needed to come here, because this is where it happened at. I just needed to feel some kind of relief."

The pool is now open during normal hours, 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
