Museum Details Plans to Demolish Two Columbus Ship Replicas

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - The local Museum of Science and History has announced plans to demolish two of the three Columbus ship replicas on the Bayfront. Word is the 25-year old vessels are simply beyond repair.

Plans call for parts of the Pinta and Santa Maria, which have been out of the water for many years, to be used to refurbish the Niña replica, which is permanently docked at the Lawrence Street T-Head.

The replicas were given to the City back in 1993 by the government of Spain -- part of an anniversary celebration of the real Columbus voyage. Museum Director Carol Rehtmeyer said the plaza where the Pinta and Santa Maria are located will be turned into a family friendly interactive part of the museum.

Rehtmeyer said the museum's board is also thinking about using some of the ships' wood to make souvenirs to be sold in the museum's gift shop.
