Homeless Issues Partnership Discuss Action Plan to Get People Off the Streets

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - A meeting of the Homeless Issues Partnership, an organization made up of local agencies that try to help the homeless, met Thursday to get a better handle on how to get more people off the street.

Assistant City Manager Susan Thorpe addressed the group at the meeting Thursday.

"That is the goal, is to come up with an action plan that has some substance to it, some dollars and cents and some real concrete steps so that we can go to those foundations and get funding," Thorpe said.

Among the proposals unveiled at the meeting were pushing new ordinances that would limit or prohibit camping, loitering, public feeding of the homeless and pan-handling; using zoning and other regulations to control where shelters can be and if they can expand their facilities; and creating a sobriety center where the homeless suffering from addiction problems can be transferred for treatment, as opposed to being taken to jail.

The City also spelled out what would make their plan a success. One of those keys is to make sure the homeless are located and served in areas away from downtown, City Hall and the entertainment districts.
