Expert Advises Local Firefighters on Rooftop Fires with Solar Panels

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Rooftop solar panels are slowly making their way to homes and businesses around the Coastal Bend, and while they are great for energy saving, it turns out they can pose a problem for firefighters.

That is why Fire Captain Mathew Pace of San Jose, Cali., was in Corpus Christi on Friday. He is an expert in fighting rooftop blazes where solar panels are present.

Pace is working with local firefighters in a three-day workshop put on by the Nueces Electric Cooperative. He said solar panels can be dangerous to them because the panels can cause an electric shock. He explained that they make it tougher to maneuver on rooftops if it becomes necessary to cut holes in the roof to let smoke escape.
