Kingsville's Donny Diaz walked away the winner of the first ever John Paul Barta Home Run Derby, and thus a $1,000 scholarship.

The contest was held at Flour Bluff High School and was named after the former Hornets' player John Paul Barta, who was killed in action overseas in Iraq in 2006. The army corporal was a two-time first-team all state baseball selection when he played for Flour Bluff.

John Paul II Centurion Jonathan Martinez finished in second place and won a $500 scholarship.
