Immigrant Smuggler Involved in 2013 Crash at NAS-Kingsville Pleads Guilty

KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) - A man charged with the felony murders and aggravated assault of seven illegal immigrants back in March of 2013 plead guilty in federal court Monday morning.

Idelfonso Garcia-Benitez was running from Kingsville police on March 20, 2013, and crashed his vehicle into a security denial barrier at the front gate of Naval Air Station-Kingsville. 14 illegal immigrants, most from Guatemala and one from Honduras, were in his truck at the time of the accident.

Seven were killed seven were injured.

Garcia-Benitez agreed to a plea deal requiring that he serve 35 years on each of the deaths, as well as a maximum sentence of 20 years for the aggravated assault. The agreement also stipulates that each sentence run concurrently with his previous federal sentence of 10 years, so the maximum time served for Garcia-Benitez will be 45 years.
