Taft Police Chief Asking Public to Help Find Owner of Abused Animal

Posted: Updated:
TAFT (Kiii News) - The Taft Police Chief spoke out Thursday about a particularly disturbing case of animal abuse. It involves a two-year old terrier mixed that rescuers found with a wire tied around her neck, left to die.

"I've never seen a case like this, and this severe, that law enforcement wasn't contacted," Taft Police Chief John Landreth said.

The dog, who rescuers named Layla, was found earlier this week in a Taft neighborhood. She had deep gashes on her neck and had to undergo surgery at the Gulf Coast Humane Society.

Thankfully, Layla is expected to make a full recovery.

Now, Chief Landreth wants to make sure whoever did it does not have anymore animals that could be abused.

"We have no idea where it took place. We'd like to know so we can take some sort of investigative action. Whoever the owner of that dog was, and whoever treated it that way, should definitely answer to somebody," Landreth said.

If you have any information that could help police find the owner, call the Taft Police Department at 361-528-6011.
