A leading figure in the Duesseldorf School of Photography, Thomas Ruff is best known for his staged and candid portraits. Kunsthalle Duesseldorf is staging an exhibition of his works from September 20, 2014 January 11, 2015.
Düsseldorf, Germany (PRWEB) August 15, 2014
In the 1970s, a group of students who studied under photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (Kunstakademie) applied new technology and contemporary vision to the Bechers style of clear, objective photographs of industrial buildings. This group came to be known as the Düsseldorf School of Photography. Thomas Ruff (born 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, Germany) is one of its leading figures. A new exhibit titled Lichten at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf shows some of his works from the late 1970s to today.
The exhibit focuses on five of the artists series from the last 35 years including the two latest, Phg (started in 2012), and Negative (started in 2014) and showcases his technical expertise and range of style, from a semi-documentary approach to post-digital photography, from natural to virtual light. The exhibit also explores how Ruff constructs a political and social perspective of the image and at the same time illustrates pivotal changes that photography has undergone over the last 30 years, such as the gradual disappearance of light in the transition from analog to digital photography.
Also included in the exhibition are Ruffs Sterne (stars) 1989-1992; Nächte (nights) 1992-1996; and his first series Interieurs 1979-1983).
