FEMA Domes Coming to Kingsville

Posted: Updated:
KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) - It looks like two Federal Emergency Management Agency shelter domes will be built in Kingsville after all. The Kingsville Independent School District board voting Monday night to proceed with the construction of the two domes.

Kingsville ISD providing us with architectural renderings of what the domes will look like once complete. The domes will also serve as athletic gymnasiums.

The school board was considering scrapping plans to build the FEMA domes if the cost was too high, but after considering what the cost would be to build traditional style gymnasiums, the school board decided to move forward with the FEMA domes.

"On the one hand with the domes, we've already received a firm bid. So we know what the cost of that is going forward. We know what the time frame is and we know that they're ready to begin. With the traditional gym, we would still be in the process of having to advertise for bids, go out for bids, have specs drawn and all of that," says KISD Board President Brian Coufal.

The two dome shaped gyms will be built right behind the new M.M. King High School and will cost nearly $14.5 Million. Four and a half million of that cost will be paid for by FEMA. The project is expected to take 14 months, once construction begins.
