Robstown, Texas- Civil Air Patrol cadets from across South Texas participated in aviation orientation flights at Nueces County Airport in Robstown, Texas on Saturday 7 February 2009. Cadets from Kingsville and Orange Grove were given the opportunity to get some hands-on flight training and learn about aviation.

"It was a good day for us," said Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP, "anytime we can give young cadets an opportunity to take to the skies is a good day."

In all, 7 CAP cadets (mostly from Kinsgville and Orange Grove) were given flight time. Additional flights will be conducted for the units other cadets in teh near future.

"Due to the nature of the flights and time involved to insure the best possible experience," continued Major Carrales, "Only about 6 cadets can be flown on any given day."

At present there are 36 cadets in the squadron, this includes cadets from Corpus Christi (and surrounding areas) as well as the Brahma Cadet Flight in Kingsville, Texas and some new cadets from Orange Grove, Texas.

The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and is charged with three primary missions – aerospace education, cadet programs and emergency services.

The Corpus Christi Composite Squadron currently serves South Texas communities south of Victoria and north of McAllen.

Cadets are from ages 12 to 18. Contact Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP at 361-779-4739 or visit ...

Thank you eveyone for helping to make the Unit a success. Our unit and mission is about service to the community. Nueces County and the City of Corpus Christi have been big supporters and we will accomplish great things because of that support.

I am one of the few south texas cadets to fly on that nice sunny day, with the wind high, and the clouds low it was one of the best days of my young life.

We would love to service more cadets, they would just need to join the Civil Air Patrol. They get 5 powered flights in all and can get Emergency Services training. The structure is based on the USAF and they learn leadership and Aerospace Education
