Alert Academy, Texas— Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Bryce A. Nix recently attended the 2009 Texas Wing Powered Flight Academy held at the Alert Academy (near Tyler, Texas) and was presented with his “solo wings” for completing a solo flight in a Civil Air Patrol aircraft on 23 June 2009. This marks a milestone for the Corpus Christi Composite Squadron’s Cadet program.
Cadet students who attend the academy must be current members, at least age 16 and who have attended at least one cadet encampment. Flight Academy is limited to 20 cadet students and 12 staff members. Cadet Nix prepared an essay entitled Why I want to attend the Texas Wing Flight Academy and received the recommendation of his Commanding Officer, Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP prior to being selected for one of the prestigious slots.
C/CMSgt Nix is a resident of Kingsville, Texas and joined the unit on14 March 2007 as part of the fledgling Brahma Cadet Flight, a branch of the Corpus Christi Composite Squadron that services the Kinsgville Area. Cadet Nix is a qualified Civil Air Patrol General Emergency Services practitioner holding ratings as a qualified Mission Radio Operator, Urban Direction Finder and Search and Rescue Ground Team member. In June of 2007, Cadet Nix attended the Texas Wing Summer Encampment where he distinguished himself as a young leader in the Civil Air Patrol. Cadet Nix is currently awaiting the completion of his General Billy Mitchell award, a coveted award and accomplishment that will make Nix the first Cadet Officer at Corpus Christi in over 6 years.
The Corpus Christi Comp Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol currently meets at CAP STATION CORPUS CHRISTI on the grounds of Signature Flight Support on the campus of Corpus Christi International Airport every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. CAP officers and Cadets meet to fulfill the three primary missions of the Civil Air Patrol; Emergency Services, Aerospace Education and Cadet Programs.
Cadet Nix is the son of Duane and Kristi Crocker of Kingsville, Texas.
