Flour Bluff High School choir headed to State competition

Out of thousands of students competing to place in this year's All-State Choir, several from Coastal Bend have made it, including four from Flour Bluff High School.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — One note at a time, these students are practicing for something they've been singing towards for years, and that is state.

It's not the first time for Junior, Analisa Gallegos.

"If someone told me this whenever I first started singing like in 6th and 7th grade, I wouldn't believe them. I'd be like 'what are you talking about? You got the wrong Analisa.' It feels like a dream almost," said Analisa Gallegos, Junior-Varsity.

Out of 15,000 auditions, 550 earn a seat, and 4 of those who made it are from Four Bluff and will compete at the next level. For three of these students, this is a first.

"Hearing my name called was... I did a double-take," stated one student.

"I've been looking at this since 6th grade and I'm so excited that I finally accomplished it," said Taylor White-Junior, Secretary of Choir.

Fernando Fernandez has been the choir director for 19 years.

He says that his students always reach for success, but a soft push never does any harm.

"They came in and they faced terrible critique from me and sometimes the left crying, sometimes they left swearing but then they came back the next day stronger, and more able, more musical," said Fernando Fernandez, Jr., Choir Director of 19 years.

When Fernando heard the news, he said, "to have one is a blessing, but to have four is mindblowing."

He says that being the choir director for nearly two decades -- this is exactly where he belongs.

"I think of teaching as a vocation, I think a good teacher is called to be a teacher," said Fernandez.

Fernandez adds that the work doesn't end there.

"For musicians, this is it. This is the super bowl, we won and in a few weeks, we're going to get our rings!"
