Woman dedicates over 60 years to Nueces County Junior Livestock Show

Lela Hayek has volunteered with the livestock show since she was 7-years-old and has continued the tradition for 63 years.

ROBSTOWN, Texas — As the 2020 Nueces County Junior Livestock Show came to an end Saturday, 3News wanted to take the time to recognize one special woman who's volunteered with the livestock show for over 60 years.

Lela Hayek has volunteered with the livestock show since she was 7-years-old and has continued the tradition for 63 years.

When asked why she's continued to be a volunteer all these years, this is what she had to say.

"Well I ask the good Lord every day to show me the way and ask him what I need to do and this is what he wants me to do," Hayek said. "To work with some of these kids, give them the responsibility and show them that I care. I taught school for 31 years. I had kids ask me, "Why do you care when no one else does?" I told them, "I will always care.""

Ms. Lela said she'll continue to volunteer as long as she can and said she's happy the children who participate in the livestock show are getting all of the opportunities they can possibly have to succeed in their education and their future.
