A Border Patrol agent died Sunday morning as a result of injuries he sustained while on patrol in the Big Bend sector, the United States Customs and Border Protection office said.

CBP said agent Rogelio Martinez and his partner were responding to "activity" while on patrol in the Van Horn, Texas area near Interstate 10 when Martinez's partner called for help.

He reported they were both injured and needed assistance, CBP said in a statement on its website.

Both agents were transported to an area hospital for treatment, but CBP said Martinez later died of his injuries.

His partner, who was not named in the statement, was reportedly left in serious condition.

Details on the circumstances leading up to their injuries and Martinez's death were not immediately available.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Agent Martinez and his family, and with the agent who was injured," CBP said in the statement.
