The results of the Corpus Christi Independent School District board of trustees election have now been made official.

The board of trustees canvassed and declared the election results at a special meeting downtown Thursday. Newly elected trustee Jane Bell was presented with a certificate of election.

Bell defeated incumbent Dr. Tony C. Diaz by just 15 votes. Diaz said he doesn't question the validity or legitimacy of the results, but also said he may request a recount.

Meanwhile, Bell said she is confident the results will stand.

"It's been a real honor for me to serve on the board for four years, and I'm totally committed to our district and would like to continue," Diaz said. "And I just want to make sure that I've done everything on my part to make sure that I did not miss a chance, perhaps, to continue on the board."

"From what I understand, those paper ballots are counted and recounted and counted and recounted before they even come to the different governing entities," Bell said. "I think that they've done their due diligence, and in the end, if they recount, maybe somebody moves a vote one way or the other, but I feel in my heart that this is a done deal."

Diaz has until 5 p.m. Monday to decide whether he wants to request a recount. If he does, he will have to foot the bill. It is not yet clear how much such a recount would cost.
