An organ donation ceremony was held Thursday for a young woman who was hit by a vehicle and gravely injured in Port Aransas over he weekend.
The ceremony happened at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital, where the family and friends of 19-year old Ashley Cantrell-Penny gathered outside the hospital around the flag pole to honor the young victim. Her organs will be given to those in need, and her parents say that helping save lives is exactly what Ashley would have wanted.
"Knowing that something so terrible and tragic, something so good can come out of it," said Michael Penny, Ashley's father.
"We don't want everyone to feel the grief that we're feeling," said Dorothy Toler, Ashley's mother. "With her dedicating her organs, she can give another family some peace, another chance with their loved ones."
Port Aransas police said the 19-year old had just left work and was walking along the 1700 block of Highway 361 when she was hit just before 10 p.m. Saturday. There has been no word if any charges will be filed against the driver.
