Councilman David Loeb announced Tuesday his intention to draft an ordinance to excuse Councilwoman Priscilla Leal's absences as she recovers from a stroke.

Leal was discovered unconscious Jan. 10 in her home after suffering from a severe stroke. She has returned to Corpus Christi after being treated in a Harlingen hospital.

Mayor Nelda Martinez said that, in her mind, there is no question about the Leal's status.

"We're going to wait until we hear from her family, and we want to give her that dignity," Martinez said. "That is her chair. It will always be her chair. This is her last term."

Leal's term expires at the end of 2014. Elections in November will determine who will fill that council seat next year.
