CCPD identifies officers involved in shooting, aggravated robbery suspects

Senior Officer Gilbert Cantu and Officer Jacqueline Deleon have both been placed on paid administrative leave.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi police have identified those who were part of an officer-involved shooting that took place Tuesday afternoon in the 200 block of Torreon Street.

Senior Officer Gilbert Cantu and Officer Jacqueline Deleon have both been placed on paid administrative leave due to their involvement or presence at the scene, according to the Corpus Christi Police Department.

According to police, Cantu has been with the department for seven years and is a field training officer. Cantu was working with a recruit officer at the time. Deleon has only been with the CCPD for less than a year and is in the field officer stage of her training.

Police said Deleon did not discharge her firearm during the incident.

The victim in the shooting was identified by family members as 23-year-old Richard Salazar.

The incident occurred while police were investigating an armed robbery that took place at the Hi-Ho convenience store in the 3900 block of Baldwin. Officers looking for suspects made contact with a man on Torreon Street and said he appeared to try pulling a gun from his waistband. That's when officers fired on him and wounded him.

Both Cantu and Deleon were placed on paid administrative leave as per department policy.

As investigators responded to the officer-involved shooting, additional officers made contact with a vehicle at the intersection of North Staples and Lipan streets with two suspects matching the robbery suspect's description

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the two males inside of the vehicle were involved in the commission of the aggravated robberies at the Hi-Ho convenience store on Baldwin and at another armed robbery that happened earlier in the day at a convenience store off Mohawk Street.

A total of three guns -- two shotguns and a handgun -- clothing and disguises used in the commission of both robberies were located and later tagged into evidence.

26-year-old Timothy Leal was arrested for aggravated robbery along with 10 outstanding municipal court warrants. A 16-year-old male was also arrested and charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful carrying of a weapon as he still had one of the weapons used in the commission of the robbery on his person.

Police have also identified and obtained an arrest warrant for a third aggravated robbery suspect, 18-year-old Lucas Martinez.
