UPDATE: Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo says a man is facing a criminal charge for firing an "AK-47 style assault rifle" near a police station early Tuesday morning.

Despite earlier concerns by police, investigators have determined the suspect was not targeting officers or the station. The 20-year-old will face a charge of felony deadly conduct.

The man's name has not been released.

At a morning press conference, Acevedo said the man was firing his rifle at some trees along the police station's property, likely showing off for his 19-year-old brother and two 15-year-old girls, said Acevedo.

A police helicopter was nearby and quickly put a spotlight on the suspect and the others. Police said they did not try to flee and waited to speak with officers.

After questioning, the man was taken into custody along with the rifle. The others were let go, including the juveniles who went with their parents.

This is the second time in less than a month that gunfire has been reported near this police station.

HOUSTON — The Houston Police Department substation on Mykawa again came under gunfire early Tuesday morning, according to Chief Art Acevedo.

This latest incident happened sometime before 12:30 a.m.

The chief said no one was wounded, and a police helicopter helped locate and detain the suspects believed to be involved. The chief tweeted an "AK-47 style assault rifle" was recovered.

Further details have not yet been released.

Earlier this month, also in the overnight hours, officers at the same substation reported hearing dozens of gunshots outside. No arrests were immediately made in that incident. Officers said they could hear some of the gunfire going right above their heads.
