Two pedestrians struck, one killed in hit-and-run crash

Police said the girls were crossing in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. The driver was speeding and ran a red light, according to officers.

A 16-year-old was killed and a 15-year-old critically injured in a hit-and-run crash at Staples Street and Mustang Trail Tuesday evening.

Corpus Christi Independent School District confirmed the 16 and 15-year-old victims are from Richard King High School.

“We respectfully ask for privacy during this difficult time,” Superintendent Dr. Roland

Hernandez said. “Our priority is caring for our district family as we mourn the loss of one of our

students and pray for another.”

Corpus Christi police said it happened around 4:45 p.m. The teens were crossing the street in a group of three when two of them were struck by a vehicle going southbound on Staples Street. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene of the accident.

Police said the girls were crossing in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. The driver was speeding and ran a red light, according to officers.

The 16-year-old victim died at the scene. The 15-year-old was transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital in critical but stable condition.

According to police, officers were able to determine that a 42-year-old male was responsible for causing the accident. He was tracked down a short time later and arrested for accident involving death and accident involving injury.

Police said they were able to track down the suspect thanks to a witness who was able to give a vehicle description and license plate number.

CCISD’s crisis counseling team has been notified and will be available to help students and

staff.
