CCISD board discusses plan to increase teacher salaries

The school board will be hosting more workshops to adjust the proposal as needed.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Independent School District board put forth a proposal Monday on how they plan to distribute pay increases to staff and faculty members since the State passed $11.6 billion legislation to raise teacher salaries.

The proposal from the board is just the first step in finalizing a budget for this upcoming school year, but it's already raising some concerns. While the bill was aimed at increasing teacher pay, CCISD included a raise for all staff and faculty.

Under the CCISD proposal, the administration will get a 3-percent increase; non-administration like bus drivers and police officers will get a 3-percent increase plus a 1-percent stipend; teachers who have been with the district for less than six years will get a 3.5-percent increase with a 1-percent stipend; and teachers who have worked for CCISD for more than six years will get a 4-percent increase plus a 1-percent stipend.

Not everyone was on board with the proposal.

"A lot of the conversation centered around our teachers who have six or more years of experience versus the teachers with five years or less," said Dr. Nancy Vera with the American Federation of Teachers.

Vera said there needs to be a bigger increase for veteran teachers.

"We believe the teachers who have been here with the Corpus Christi Independent School District and who have proven they are dedicated and altruistic regarding their children need to be given more money," Vera said.

The school board will be hosting more workshops to adjust the proposal as needed. A final decision will be made Aug. 26 and will go into effect immediately.
