I meet the criteria for the category because, in the middle of my freshman year, my mother was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma cancer. This type of cancer was a rare one where there was no known cure. This came as a huge shock to me because the mom who always seemed fine was diagnosed with cancer which at the time, I thought meant death.

My mom went through several treatments but my family was told that she only has a 25% chance of living. This devastated me. I couldn't understand why God was so cruel and how I was so unlucky to have my mother get diagnosed with cancer. My grades started to fall and I didn't want to go to school but then my mom told me that she didn't want my grades to drop because of her so I resolved myself to do the best I can and get high enough grades for her to not worry so that my mom could just concentrate on getting better and fighting off the cancer. My grades went up and I begun to start focusing harder on getting high grades.

I meet the criteria for the scholarship because even through hardship and tough situation, I was able to keep my grades up and keep moving forward. I didn't stay depressed cause my mom didn't want her circumstance to be an excuse for my grades to drop.
