Following the address, Abbott spoke on camera directly to students and faculty at the district for a Facebook video.

"This is Governor Greg Abbott at the Texas Capitol, and I want to say congratulations to all the students at Premont, and to the teachers, to the principals, to everybody in education there," Abbott said in the video. "You were recognized today at the Texas Capitol for the excellence that you have achieved. I want you to know that I'm very proud of you for setting the example of what a good education program can be."

Premont ISD Superintendent Steve VanMatre was invited last week to the governor's State of the State Address to represent the school district. He posted the news on social media along with his own congratulatory message.
