A Corpus Christi family is grieving the loss of their 75-year old grandmother after she was struck and killed crossing Ayers Wednesday night.

The accident happened just after 6 p.m. on Ayers near Roosevelt. Witnesses said the driver tried to swerve out of the way, but could not avoid hitting the elderly woman. Right after the accident, the driver jumped out of his car and tried to help her, but it was too late.

The Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that the 75-year old grandmother is Elva Gonzalez.

"She would talk about her family and grandkids all the time," said Lydia Rosas, the victim's friend. "Lovable. Very nice."

"A very kind person," said Vicki Lloyd, another friend. "Just walked over here and played Bingo every night."

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
