Firefighters help Fleet Reserve Association properly dispose of flags

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the nation's flag on June 14, 1777.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi chapter of the Fleet Reserve Association held a special flag burning ceremony Friday afternoon in Flour Bluff.

The Fleet Reserve is a nonprofit group made of former Navy, Marine and Coast Guard personnel.

Firefighters from Nueces County joined the Fleet Reserve to help properly dispose of some old and tattered flags.

According to tradition, flags cannot just be thrown away; they must be burned appropriately.

"We have to destroy in the flag, in honor of our fallen soldiers and marines and every man that has fought for that flag," president Ricardo Hankerson said.
