The City-County Health Department hosted a summit Thursday to discuss the importance of influenza and human papillomavirus vaccinations in schools.

Nurses from schools throughout Nueces County gathered along with doctors from Driscoll Children's Hospital to discuss the latest arguments for the preventative care. Despite some national concerns over vaccinations, the medical profession seems to agree both flu and HPV shots are safe.

Currently, both vaccines are not required for public schools, which is something that the Centers for Disease Control is looking to change.

Dr. Lori Anderson acknowledges the controversy surrounding HPV vaccinations, but says the virus can spread in other ways and not just through intercourse.

The City-County Health Department is offering flu shots for $20 at their westside facility on Horne and Greenwood. For more information, call 361-826-7200.
