On Tuesday afternoon in Kingsville, a student found that the benefits of hard work and dedication really do pay off.

Xzavion Harris received a four-year leadership scholarship to any university he wants to attend. The scholarship is named in honor of the first African American Marine Corps officer, Frederick C. Branch.

Major Jeremiah Salame says Harris' strong character and academic record set him above and beyond most potential candidates vying for the award.

Harris is considered to be in the top 10-percent of all recruiting prospects all around the country.

"This scholarship is extremely competitive," Salame said.

Harris has decided to attend Prairie View A&M University. After he is done with his studies, he will serve as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps.
