Library hours to extend after Girl Scouts protest

The library currently closes at 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Corpus Christi Girl Scout troop took to City Hall Tuesday to protest the operating hours of the Janet Harte Branch Public Library in Flour Bluff.

The library currently closes at 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays.

"I'm asking you to consider this and give us back permanently the operating hours that we had," Tracey Crown said. "Thank you very much."

Officials said the change in hours was for that particular location only and stemmed from budget cuts left over from 2017.

Thanks to the Girl Scouts, the City said the hours of the Harte Library will now be extended to allow the library to stay open until 7 p.m. over the summer.

The Girl Scout troop's protest showed the important role public libraries can play in the community.

"Yes, we're really happy that people are still wanting services for the public library and we do see that often, individuals to request different types of services," Library Director Laura Garcia said. "Especially with summer coming up, we know that a lot of them are looking forward to these services we provide."

The library will remain open until 7 p.m. starting June 3.
