Potential buyers learned about one crucial element in buying a home Tuesday night.

The Corpus Christi Association of Realtors put on an event to teach first-time home buyers about their credit; where to get their scores, and how to fix their credit if needed.

They also talked bout debt management.

Realtors said the housing crash has changed the market, and who can get a loan.

"No reputable realtor is going to put someone in a home that all the evidence points to this person not being able to afford this home long term," said Carl Thomanson of the Corpus Christi Association of Realtors.

"It's a little scary at first, but I think it was helpful information, that you're committed for something like that," said Emylee Schonhoeft, who is looking to buy a home.

For anyone trying to repair their credit, the first step is to get a free copy of your credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com, and go from there.
