In a three-to-two vote, the Beeville City Council voted Tuesday night to enact a tough smoking ordinance.

The tight restrictions will prohibit businesses from allowing customers to smoke in their establishments.

Many business owners are now threatening a lawsuit. In fact, dozens of Beeville business owners say the ordinance is unfair. The new rules on smoking apply to businesses, public places, parks and even private clubs.

However, bars, clubs, and restaurants said they are hit the hardest since their clientele has been used to smoking freely.

Beeville Councilmember Bebe Adamez voted for the ordinance and said the 25-foot rule -- that smokers would have to be 25 feet from the entrance to the establishment -- was reduced to 15 feet.

Still, the ordinance, which is set to go into effect in 30 days, may face an uphill battle. Some business owners said they are considering a lawsuit.
