As the Nueces County Junior Livestock show comes to a close, some participants are walking away with some extra cash in their pocket.

Cash, in the form of scholarship money.

On Saturday, the Blue Ribbon Sale took place. This auction is a chance for the winners of this year's show to sell their animal or project for some big bucks. A portion of the money gets goes towards the student's college fund.

Bonnie Berry a volunteer and buyer at the show says not only is the scholarship money a great reward but it also encourages students to continue their education after they graduate high school.

"We're excited to give away scholarships for the 2018 school year," Berry said.

Participants like Reagan Hoelscher knows what it's like to win big. She's been showing animals since third grade and fifth grade, she began showing rabbits. Last year, Hoelscher was named Nueces County Junior Livestock Show Queen, a big deal for the young girl.

"I just had so much fun getting to see everything up close and kind of what goes into it and how much the volunteers work all year long to make sure we have a fun and successful week," Hoelscher said.

Hoelscher says the stock show is more than raising animals or the ag tech competition; competing means dedication, discipline and learning a couple of lessons along the way.

"You learn so many things, you learn responsibility, you learn how to talk to people," the tenth grader adds.

As a sophomore at Tuloso-Midway High School, Hoelscher says she will continue to participate in the junior stock show until she graduates; saving and preparing for a career the veterinary field.

"This just goes towards our college fund...it's just a really great experience," Hoelscher added.

An experience that wouldn't be possible with the organizers, contributors, volunteers and most importantly, the individuals closest to the students.

"The youth all have parents that are usually very supportive, they've got volunteers that are very supportive, without any of those elements it wouldn't be what it is today," Berry said.
