Campaign featuring George Strait to urge tourism in Rockport-Fulton

The goal is to get people from around the state to visit the area for their summer vacation.

A huge media campaign is set to begin in two weeks. It will feature country music superstar George Strait, and its goal is to tell Texans why Rockport-Fulton should be their summer destination.

Business and community leaders from around the Rockport-Fulton area are brainstorming to help come up with ideas for the new media campaign, which starts in two weeks. The goal is to get people from around the state to visit the area for their summer vacation.

"Time is of the essence. We've got to hit people now because this is when they're making their decisions on what they're going to do in late spring or early summer, so it's a critical time," community leader Jeff Hunt said. "We've got some festivals coming through here, so we need to move. We need to strike while the iron is hot."

Hunt is from Austin and has a second home in Rockport. He is helping Rockport-Fulton with the media blitz across Texas because of his business connections with a company out of Virginia called ICF.

Andrew LaVanway, ICF Senior Vice President, said his company is helping out with the campaign free of charge.

"Since 2005, we've helped communities recover from hurricanes," LaVanway said.

The marketing and advertising company worked to help New Orleans recover from Katrina, and then later after Sandy hit the northeast.

Even Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent a taped message to make sure Rockport-Fulton knows he is promising to get the area back up to speed.

"You have a governor who has you back throughout this entire process," Abbott said. "I've been there countless times already and I will continue to work with local officials and business leaders to get the Rockport-Fulton economy right back on track."

George Strait, who was a vacation home in Rockport, is ready to play a big role in the comeback ad campaign. They hope to spread the word that you can find yourself in Rockport-Fulton this summer.
