CCISD police reassure parents about safety on campuses

Police said their presence on campus is one element that contributes to school safety.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi Independent School District police were called to action for two incidents at high schools within the district on Thursday.

Both were resolved but district police wanted to reassure parents and students on Friday.

Police said their presence on campus is one element that contributes to school safety. There are two campus officers and security guards at each high school, one officer at every middle school, and a handful of officers that protrol the elementary schools.

On top of that, depending on the safety concern ranging from a natural disaster to an active shooter, the school will go on lockdown -- even as a precautionary measure.

CCISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke said thanks to the 2018 bond that passed, all campuses will eventually become perimeter secured so that there is only one point of entry.

"Get our fences secured. Get all our outside doors renovated or updated. All those things get done," Warnke said. "We will be in a de facto state of lockdown. You can't come into our building without asking permission."

That also includes adding a locked lobby to the front of every school in the district.

Warnke added that each school is required to run safety drills every six weeks -- twice what the state recommends.
