City of Aransas Pass gives public a chance to discuss annexation

ARANSAS PASS, Texas — A public meeting was held Monday evening in Aransas Pass, Texas, to discuss what has become a big controversy there. At issue is whether the City should annex about 1,400 acres of land, which supporters say would keep the land in question away from other cities like Corpus Christi.

The City of Aransas Pass said it's part of their Phase 2 project -- their way of protecting the area from others trying to grab land from around them.

"We looked at protecting the city from Corpus Christi coming into the city," Aransas Pass City Manager Gary Edwards said. "Phase 1 accomplished that. Now looking at protection of the shoreline and bypass."

Two areas are up for consideration -- one along Highway 35, and the other along business Highway 35, which includes Rockport Terminals.

"Rockport Terminals has been very aggressive in trying to protect their area and discourage annexation," Edwards said. "They've been quite clear in the process."

Edwards said the City is working to come to terms with the company.

"They have indicated that they want to make sure that the services will be provided to the area. We've been negotiating and provided a service plan," Edwards said.

The City will be giving the company a chance to speak at a public meeting at the Aransas Pass Civic Center, along with anyone else from the community who might have concerns.

"Sometimes, not all the time, annexation will mean some people are unhappy and don't want to be in the city limits," Edwards said. "Perfectly understandable response. On the other hand, there are times for the public benefit for the annex. We want to make sure the bypass is protected."

Edwards said the effort to annex the land has gained support from neighboring cities, including the City of Ingleside and the City of Rockport. It's not a done deal, however. The annexation is still under consideration by city council members.
