Coastal Bend community gather to remember King High School drowning victim

After days of searching for Smith's body, fishermen spotted it just south of Bob Hall Pier.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Dozens of people gathered at a vigil Friday night for King High School student 18-year-old Je'sani Smith.

Smith drowned last week at whitecap beach, and that is where the vigil was held and has a definite meaning to family and friends of Smith.

After days of searching for Smith's body, fishermen spotted it just south of Bob Hall Pier.

"I named him out of water bottle Desani, and Sani loved the water, and Sani had his last moments in the water, and they say that Jesus lives through the water... so all of this is just a connection.," aunt Tia Toler said. "Jesani is looking down on us right now, and he is happy."

Smith's family was so moved by the outpour of support from the community not only from across built but by Friday's turn out and all the memories shared of him.

Shirts worn said #LongLiveSani12 and you will never be forgotten.

According to Smith's family, he turned 18-years-old in early April.

Smith's funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Christian Fellowship by the burial at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
