Corpus Christi Police Department adds new stealth vehicles to police fleet

The department is trying to keep the streets safe with the addition - -by deterring unsafe driving.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Majority of drivers in the Coastal Bend do not notice police stealth cars and that is the idea behind unmarked police units pulling drivers over and giving officers an advantage as they try to enforce traffic laws.

The Corpus Christi Police Department has more stealth cars on the road after adding two additional vehicles to their traffic unit.

The stealth cars include a white, silver and dark gray dodge chargers and one gray challenger.

The department is trying to keep the streets safe with the addition - -by deterring unsafe driving.

The stealth cars blend in with traffic looking for speeders, distracted driving, and other traffic violations

"All traffic laws are in place for a reason, I mean we have speed limits cause engineers have determined that's the safe speed for that roadway," Capt. Russell Sherman said. "It only takes a few people driving unsafe to make our road unsafe."

According to CCPD, in 2018 stealth units had 3,000 traffic stops, 900 and 75 of those were distracted drivers and 1,300 were aggressive drivers.

The police department doesn't know if they will be adding any more stealth vehicles any time soon.

Officers who pull drivers over will be dressed in full uniform.
