Nueces County Judge: 'Our hospitalization rates are just downright frightening'

With the highest ever hospital capacity devoted to COVID inpatients in the Coastal Bend, Judge Canales said she's constantly requesting help from the state.

NUECES COUNTY, Texas — The Coastal Bend continues to set high COVID-19 related records, which calls for extreme concern from Nueces County officials.

"Our hospitalization rates are just downright frightening," said Barbara Canales, the Nueces County Judge.

Another day, another harsh pill to swallow. As of Wednesday, 542 people in the Coastal Bend are in the hospital being treated for COVID-19.

"They are above 37% and they've been at this level for the past two days," said Judge Canales.

While the rise continues, Luis Wilmot, the Assistant Director of Public Health, asked the community to see beyond a number because these are people they're talking about.

"Each one of these digits represents a life. Represents a family being affected," said Wilmot.

With the highest ever hospital capacity devoted to COVID inpatients in the Coastal Bend, Judge Canales said she's constantly requesting help from the state. Since then, about 160 extra medical professionals are slowly making their way to local hospitals. She said even with the 160 more help is still needed.

"Everybody's on the same boat, but we're in a different type of ship. We're on the kind that sinks," she added.

While our medical heroes are doing their part, health experts continue sharing the same message: it's about time the public does their part and take the deadly virus seriously.
