CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Students and faculty at Del Mar College are getting in the helping spirit Thursday with a grand opening of the Viking Food Pantry at Harvin Student Center on Del Mar College East Campus.
The new pantry offers non-perishable food items such as canned tuna, soups, and vegetables for students in need.
Officials with Del Mar College said they came up with the idea after hearing from students who have a hard time affording meals.
"Just the other day I was at home, and I didn't have any food, and I was thinking' man how am I gonna get through the week. I have classes, I have finals, and then I got an email about the food pantry opening, and I was like wow that is a good gift," student Ricardo Hernandez said.
The food pantry is part of a partnership with the Coastal Bend Food Bank.
