Downed power line sparks grass fire on Padre Island, AEP Texas working to restore power

AEP Texas crews initially hoped to have power restored by around 1:30 p.m., but as of around 2:20 p.m. updated that they are assessing the condition of the outage.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nearly 2,400 American Electric Power customers lost power on Padre Island at around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday after a downed power line sparked a grass fire.

It grass fire was sparked around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday at at Whitecap and Tesoro, according to firefighters from Nuecses County ESD #2. They said the fire is what caused the power outage.

AEP Texas crews initially hoped to have power restored by around 1:30 p.m., according to their Outage Map, but as of around 2:20 p.m. updated that they are assessing the condition of the outage. As of that time, just over 900 customers remained without power.
