Community members from various backgrounds gathered Tuesday at Gloria Hicks Elementary School for their seventh annual Drop Everything and Read event.

The nationwide program is designed to bring volunteers and students together to teach the importance of books and literacy.

"I like that they get all the readers together and they do all this stuff for the students," fourth-grader Rachael Perez said. "I like learning new subjects. I like coming back from summer break because I get to learn new stuff that never existed."

3News and about 150 volunteers went to the event to read to the students.
