CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coastal Bend emergency planners held a workshop Thursday night for residents to be purposed if a Shelter-in-Place order were issued.

The Emergency Planning Committee want to make sure you are prepared if a Shelter-in-Place were ever to take place.

Residents need to ensure they are safe from any hazardous chemicals, bring pets inside, lock doors, close windows, air vents. Turn off cooling and heating systems in order to not exchange air from outside. Go to an area of your home, or office where there are no windows.

In order to prepare for the situation, Emergency Planning Committee encourages residents to have a Ready to Go Kit with items like a flashlight radio, phone list, first aid kit, a towel to place under a door to prevent gas from coming in.

If residents have windows, Emergency Planning Committee advises to cover them with duck tape, to prevent glass from shattering if there were an explosion.

Residents must remain in their Shelter-in-Place until they are given an all clear or told to evacuate.

"If something doesn't feel right, if there's a sound or a smell or you sense something that there's a problem, most likely there is, so important we use common sense and five senses all at the same time too," coordinator Joanne Salge said.

According to Salge, if your children are 'sheltering place' at their school, don't leave to get them because you would be putting everyone at risk there. School officials know how to protect the children.

Residents should have a plan in place if a situation were to occur at work or at home.
