CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) — Family and friends gathered Friday outside of The Spot Beer Garden on Greenwood Avenue for a barbeque fundraiser in the name of Escamilla Esperanza.

Esperanza, who also went by Hope Plazola, was killed during a shooting Tuesday. Her daughter is accused of the murder.

Plazola's cousin Vanessa Moreno hoped to raise at least $5,000 to cover funeral expenses.

"Friends and family have come, given up their time so that way it is possible so we can have her a good service. And she was a great woman. She was a great woman who was very loved and will be very missed," Moreno said.

There is currently a GoFundMe account for Plazola where people can make contributions.

Moreno said their goal was to continue selling barbecue plates until they are sold out, even if they extend the fundraiser into the night.
