Fire breaks out in silo at Interstate Grain Port Terminal

The fire was reported around 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Corpus Christi Fire Department.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi and Annaville firefighters worked from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the late afternoon to make sure a fire that broke out in a silo at the Interstate Grain Port Terminal was put out.

Grain dust had ignited Monday morning but was confined to just that one silo.

Corpus Christi Fire Chief Robert Rocha said there was a challenge getting water to where it was needed, stating that there is just too much land in that area to have a fire hydrant for every acre. Thankfully, however, there was no rush to put it out because it was safer to attack the blaze slowly.

"As fire chief my primary concern is for the health and safety of my firefighters," Rocha said. "We wanted to make sure that whatever technical tactic that we undertook in order to mitigate the process, we weren't going to put firefighters at risk. So we took our time."

Rocha said the damage was contained to one silo and no one was hurt. An investigation is still ongoing into the cause of the grain dust explosion.
