Flour Bluff High School track alumnus named Rookie of the Year by national league

Thompson was recruited as a decathlete by the U.S. Naval Academy in 2016

FLOUR BLUFF (Kiii News) — A former Flour Bluff High School student helped the U.S. Navy Patriot Track Team win big in Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 5th.

Clay Thompson graduated from FBHS in 2016 and immediately after, was accepted into the Naval Academy Prep School. He is now a Midshipman at the Naval Academy. The UIL champion made several feats as an athlete in high school. In 2016, he qualified for state championships in pole vault, long jump and various sprints.

After spending some time in the prep academy he was recruited by the Naval Academy as a Decathlete. Recently, his hard work paid off in a national track meet. Clay helped his team set a new record of 281 total points in the Patriot League.

During the outdoor championship, Clay scored high in his events and even set a new personal record in pole vault; nearly clearing 16 feet. Additionally, Clay won the 400 meter race, setting another personal best with a time of 52 seconds.

By winning these events, Thompson was awarded Rookie of the Year by the Patriot League.
