BRANDON, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has arrested a teen they say is responsible for a shooting that happened Friday afternoon at Westfield Brandon.
A fight at the mall spilled out into the parking lot, resulting in the shooting that injured one person, the sheriff's office explains.
Quran Deandre Johnson, 19, was arrested on Saturday while driving a stolen car, deputies explain. He's facing charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and simple battery.
At around 4:13 p.m. Friday, sheriff's office deputies responded to a call about shots fired after an argument between two men inside the mall had continued outside. At some point, one person, now identified as Johnson, pulled out a gun and shot the other man, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reports.
The man was transported to Tampa General Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury while Johnson left the mall before deputies arrived, the agency explains.
Despite ongoing rumors and messages on social media, Sheriff's spokesperson Crystal Clark confirmed there was no active shooter incident at the mall. In fact, she added, operations are resuming as normal.
An investigation is underway to figure out what happened before the shooting.
